.AU - Australia

    REQUIREMENTS
    To be eligible for a domain name in the .COM.AU, registrants must be:

    A Person applying for a licence must:
    1. have an Australian presence; and
    2. satisfy any eligibility and allocation criteria for the namespace being applied for.
    A Person applying for a licence in the com.au and net.au namespaces must be
    1. a commercial entity; and
    2.  the domain name applied for must be:
      • a match of the Person’s company, business, statutory or Personal name; or
      • an acronym of the Person’s company, business, statutory or Personal name; or
      • a match of the Person’s Australian Trade Mark; or
      • a match to or an acronym of a name of a related body corporate or
      • a match or an acronym of a name of:
        • a partnership of which the Person is a partner;
        • a trust of which the Person is a trustee; or
      • a match or synonym of the name of:
        • a service that the Person provides;
        • goods that the Person sells (whether retail or wholesale);
        • an event that the Person registers or sponsors;
        • an activity that the Person facilitates, teaches or trains;
        • premises which the Person operates
        • and which that Person is providing at the time of the application.
    Important note: This rule (stated under 2) does not apply where a Person has established an Australian presence by relying on an Australian Trade Mark, the domain name must be an exact match to the words which are the subject matter of the Australian Trade Mark.

    Criteria for a foreign entity using an Australian Trade Mark.
    • A foreign legal entity is eligible to register a name in com.au or net.au on the basis of holding an Australian trademark.
    Criteria
    • The domain name must be an exact match to the words which are the subject matter of the Australian Trade Mark
    • The domain name must include all the words in the order in which they appear in the Australian Trade Mark, excluding:
      • DNS identifiers such as com.au. punctuation marks such as an exclamation point or an apostrophe, articles such as ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘and ’or ‘of’; and ampersands
    Allocation criteria for com.au / net.au

    The domain name must relate to:
    • the legal or business name of the commercial entity or trade mark; or
    • a name related to the commercial operations of the entity
    o Services
    o Goods
    o Events
    o Activities
    o Premises

    Please note: The registry requires that the registrar validate the registrant's name and postal address. BA validates the registrant name and address against the ABN or ACN number provided with the registrant details.

    TRANSFER
    An "Authorisation Code" must be provided in the request, which can be obtained from the current registrar by the owner or Admin-C of the domain. The Auth-code can also be requested directly from AuDA at https://pw.auda.org.au/

    Restrictions

    .AU is the so-called country code Top-Level-Domain (ccTLD) of Australia. An .AU domain is normally used by companies who are located in Australia or who have business relationships with Australia.

    • COM.AU: For Australian registered companies or a trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory or an Australian partnership or sole trader or a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia or owners of an Australian Registered Trade Mark or an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark or associations incorporated in any Australian State or Territory or Australian commercial statutory bodies
    • NET.AU: same as for .COM.AU
    • ORG.AU: For a charity operating in Australia or a non-profit organisation operating in Australia
    • ID.AU: For Australian Citizens and Australian Residents
